August 26, 1921
The first higher education institution of our country, teaching in native language, was established on the basis of the decree No. 66 "On the establishment of the First Azerbaijan Men's State Pedagogical Institute" signed by the Chairman of the Azerbaijan SSC Nariman Narimanov. On November 15, 1921, the first classes started with 6 students and 8 teachers. In 1924, the Institute had its first graduation with 28 graduates.

The institute temporarily operated within the Azerbaijan State University. When it resumed its activity, it was Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute named after V. I. Lenin.

Pedagogical Institute was temporarily merged with Azerbaijan State University.
1967 year
Nakhchivan branch of API (Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute) was opened. In 1972, Nakhchivan Pedagogical Institute was established on the basis of this branch.

Years 1968-1969
In these years Khankendi branch of the Pedagogical Institute was founded. Later, in 1973, an independent Khankendi Pedagogical Institute was established on the basis of the branch. In 1989, Shusha faculty of ASPI (Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute) was founded on the basis of the Azerbaijani branch of Khankendi Pedagogical Institute. The faculty became a branch in 1991.

In the Cultural Center of the current State Security Service, a large ceremonial meeting was held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ASPI. Heydar Aliyev, the candidate for the membership of the Central Committee Political Bureau of the Soviet Union Communist Party and the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijan Communist Party, put the "Red Labor Flag" order on the flag of the Institute at the meeting (Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 26.05.1972).

The 60th anniversary of ASPI named after V.I.Lenin was held in the Cultural Center of the current State Security Service with the participation of Heydar Aliyev, the candidate for membership of the Central Committee Political Bureau of the Soviet Union Communist Party and the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijan Communist Party of.

According to the decision No. 76 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, ASPI named after V. I. Lenin became a University. In November of the same year the university was named after Nasreddin Tusi.

By the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan Teachers' Institute (ATI) joined ASPU and its 7 branches (Kazakh, Zagatala, Sheki, Guba, Agjabedi, Jalilabad, Shamakhi) became the parts of ASPU. After some time, Gazakh branch was merged with Baku State University, and the Zagatala branch was joined University of Economics.

Baku Industrial and Pedagogical College merging with Azerbaijan State Pedagogical College began to operate as Azerbaijan State Pedagogical College under ASPU.

The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed the Decree "On the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University". According to the decree, on December 17, 2021, the 100th anniversary of the University was celebrated as a solemn ceremony at the Heydar Aliyev Center.
